Pilates for back pain

How Reformer Pilates restores balance to your back.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people come to Pilates Delft. And for good reason: Pilates is exceptionally well suited to strengthening the muscles around your spine, improving your posture, and breaking painful patterns.

CAUSE

How back pain develops

Back pain often develops from a combination of factors: sitting too long, poor posture at your desk, lifting too heavy, or an imbalance between the muscles that support your spine. It often feels like the pain comes out of nowhere, but in reality it builds up over weeks or months.

APPROACH

Why the Reformer helps

On the Reformer you can work lying down, sitting, kneeling, or standing. For people with back pain, I often start lying down, where your back is supported and you can safely activate your core without strain. Thanks to the adjustable resistance, we can tailor the exercise precisely to what your back can handle at that moment.

The Reformer gives feedback. You feel immediately which muscles are working. This helps you learn to recognise and engage your core and stabilisers, so your back is better supported in everyday life.

What can you expect?

In practice, I see people notice a difference after just a few sessions: less stiffness, more space between the vertebrae, better awareness of their posture. With chronic complaints it takes a bit more time, but progress is almost always noticeable.

Working with a physiotherapist? We are happy to align the exercises with your treatment. Many clients continue working with me after a course of physio, for maintenance, building strength, and prevention.
