Gently getting stronger with a sensitive lower back
Building strength without forcing anything.
A sensitive lower back makes you careful. Many people end up moving less because of it, while your back actually benefits most from calm, controlled movement. I get this question a lot in the studio, and I give an honest answer.
SOUND FAMILIAR?
Why your lower back is sensitive
A sensitive lower back is rarely caused by one wrong movement. It is usually a sum of things: a lot of sitting, little variety in your posture, and deep muscles slowly losing their role. The superficial back muscles take over, tighten up, and give you that familiar stiff, sensitive feeling.
APPROACH
Building up gently on the Reformer
On the Reformer you start lying down, with your back fully supported. The adjustable spring resistance lets you activate your deep abdominal and back muscles without putting pressure on your lower back. This teaches your body to engage the right muscles again, layer by layer.
No promise that everything will be fixed right away, but a careful approach that builds up a little further every week. Want to read more about back complaints and the Reformer? I have covered that in this article in more detail.
What can you expect?
Most people feel more control and less tension in their lower back after a few weeks. Every body is different, so we build up at the pace that suits you.
Seeing a physiotherapist? Then I am happy to align the exercises with your treatment, that works best for everyone.
